President's Notes

Summer greetings to residents of Summit Village. With winter activities ended we look forward to our summer schedule and activities.

The Resort reports a successful winter season and looks forward to a busy summer. Golf leagues, tennis, boating and other activities are available through their offices.

We are looking forward to the summer activities planned by our Social Committee (the schedule is enclosed). Please contact the committee for reservations when requested.

The Resort has withdrawn from the Beach Club as was announced at our annual meeting. Since that time we have been working with the Resort to formulate an agreement for their use of our roadways. At the time of this writing, we have not reached that agreement.

The board has noted that our mailings have become quite expensive. The Cedar River and Schuss Associations currently utilize e-mail to correspond with their members. In the near future, your board will consider this topic again and needs your input. If you would like your notices delivered via e-mail, please forward/or notify Judy Pinger of your address, we can then add that to our data base.

Last week Michael Jordan announced his resignation as COO and GM of Shanty Creek Resorts, effective April 30, 2011. He is returning to St. Louis to be near his family. We thank him for his service to Shanty Creek Resort and wish him well in his future endeavors.

Your Board has worked diligently to make our area a great place to work and play. Please contact them with your congratulations on a job well done as well as your suggestions for improvements. Our meeting schedule is posted on our website, (svashantycreek.com) all members are welcome to attend and to offer comments for the betterment of our association.

Architecture

Since last spring, three roof, two grading/landscaping, one exterior painting, one deck and several dead/dying tree cutting projects have been brought to the attention of the committee and approved, thereby assuring property owner compliance with the SVA association. All Shanty Creek SVA property owners should be aware that SVA guidelines require committee approval before making any changes to your property, including exterior colors. Please refer to your SVA manual and when in doubt, submit an application. The committee is there to insure projects meet the architectural intent of the of association. If you have any questions, please call any of the committee members.

Beach Club

Since we still have snow as I write this update it is hard to believe spring is around the corner. I am a new chairperson for the Beach Club but have had property at the resort since 1983, so have some prior knowledge and experiences at the Beach Club.

Please review the Beach Club Rules and Regulations with your family and guest. Since our “Good Neighbors” at Shanty Creek Resort have opted out of using the Beach Club it is essential that we sign in and out and have your Beach Club Card. Please, be nice and courteous to our fine staff and if you have a complaint or a complement feel free to contact me, the supervisor or another Board Member.

The storage facilities at the Club are for SVA equipment not personal items. Secondly, please police the canoe/kayak storage area; leave the area as neat as you found it.

Enjoy the summer

Communication Services

If you are a new property owner, welcome to Summit Village. If you haven’t already received a Summit Village Association Owner’s Manual and Directory please let me know. There is valuable information in this book that will explain and questions you may have regarding our rules and regulations.

You can also send any questions you may have through our web site, http://www.svashantycreek.com and we will refer them to the proper chairperson for handling.

It is important that you keep your address changes up to date with the Summit Village Association. Please notify us of any changes as soon as they occur.

Long Range Planning

The cupboard is about bare for the Long Range Planning committee. The last 2 projects, installation of swings at the Beach Club and a permanent, rather than the wood chip, walkway are really short term and will be implemented in 2011.

Other mentioned projects such as upgraded shower facilities, rerouting the walking trail, and additional parking at PineBrook are also considered short term.

Planning for replacing trees at the Beach Club due to disease is long term while replacing any due to natural causes will be very short term and considerable expensive.

New ideas for long range planning are definitely needed. Send your ideas to the committee at the Board’s address. All will be considered.

Finance

Another year has gone by and once again I find myself pondering what to say in the Village Voice to hold your interest. I’m totally at a loss, so I guess it will just have to be the usual boring financial information.

As you are aware, we had a dues increase of 8% for the 2011 fiscal year. This was necessary because Shanty Creek resort chose to discontinue letting their guests use our beach club. This was a substantial loss of income so we had to make a difficult decision to increase fees. I believe this is the first increase since fiscal year 2000. However, there have been instances when the board felt it necessary to levy special assessments. The most recent one was last year for the caterpillar worm invasion.

Now let’s get down to the really boring information. Income for the 2010 fiscal year amounted to $262,000 and expenses were $249,000, leaving a net profit of $13,000. This was accomplished by working with our vendors and making sure the dollars we spent were necessary to the maintenance of Summit Village.

As in prior years, we are determined and dedicated to make sure that your money is being spent prudently to insure that our property values are maintained at the highest level.

Roads & Grounds

Well we have endured another relatively mild winter, and without too many issues.

The Summit Village gates will have been made operable again during April as the weather will have allowed and our service contractor makes his inspection.

A road inspection shall take place after our spring road cleaning has been completed to determine if any resurfacing or patching will be required.

Our Ash tree removal program will continue, as we monitor the need to remove any such threatening the roadways from the road right of way.

Contracts for the Beach Club grounds maintenance and Boat Docks install and removal have been awarded.

On our list of to dos this season are to replace the wood chip walking path at the Beach Club with a hard surface sidewalk type. We also will consider beautifying the east entrance to Deskin Drive, and other areas that may be brought to our attention and that funds will allow.

The Beach Club pavilion concrete slab was replaced last fall and with some landscaping items to be completed this spring will make it ready for the summer season.

Dog Owners: As winter fades, evidence remains that not everyone picks up after their animals. Please, as respect to others, do so. And with spring planting of roadside flower beds, efforts should be made to keep dogs from trampling and/or digging in them.

Social Events

We welcome back those who escaped the northern winter in favor of warmth and sunshine. For those of us who embraced the snow and cold, it was a great year for winter activities. It’s springtime now and that can mean only one thing – the Beach Club will open soon and the summer fun will begin! Please see the enclosed calendar of events for more detailed information.

Please mark May 28th on your calendar for our annual Beach Club clean-up. If you want to witness a community in action, please join us. The Beach Club is a beautiful place due to the hard work of volunteers who prepare it for the summer season. We offer a free lunch for the volunteers, followed by a summer kick-off dinner that evening. We will provide chicken, place settings and ice. We ask that you bring a dish to pass along with your own beverages.

This summer we are joining our friends at Cedar River and Schuss in a Three Village golf outing on Tuesday, August 23rd. It will be a 9 hole mixed scramble event at Schuss followed by a dinner at the Beach Club. Please check the SVA website for more information and a flyer for the event. In addition, the July 4th and Labor Day picnics are great opportunities to share good food and good times. As always, friends and family are encouraged to attend all SVA events.

The annual meeting will be held September 24th followed by the Three Village Dinner. Information will be mailed prior to this event along with a registration form. We encourage you to attend as many events as possible. After all, the strong sense of community is what makes Summit Village a wonderful place to live.

Community Relations

The Summit Village Association has over the last several years provided financial support to many community projects through our Community service committee. Within the frame work of the association we have many opportunities to interact with the resort as well as the community as a whole.

In the past we’ve support various programs and projects ranging from junior achievement to the white pine stampede. We provide funds for the kiosk found in downtown Bellaire, providing information to tourists and residence about activities throughout our community. We’ve been environmentally involved by supporting the Grass River Natural Area, as well as, several of the watershed projects being undertaken in the area. In addition, we’ve responded to the needs of those less fortunate than those of us living at Shanty Creek by supporting the Bellaire Food and Baby Pantries.

This year we hope to provide support to as many organizations that require assistance through our new mini-grant program. Any organization can apply for a grant to support one or more of their on-going programs by filling out an application found on-line at our web site www.svashantycreek.com.

We have been blessed to live in one of the most beautiful areas in Michigan, if not the country, and we have an obligation to be part of its continuing growth. The Summit Village Association is proud to be part of Bellaire and Antrim County through our community service endeavors.
